The current defending Stanley Cup champions are the Washington Capitals who defeated the Vegas Golden Knights 4-1 in games in last year’s final.
Stanley Cup History
The most successful team in the Stanley Cup finals era is the Montreal Canadiens, who have claimed the trophy on 24 occasions. Second in the list are the Toronto Maple Leafs with 13 victories. However, it’s been a long wait for both teams since last winning the trophy, with the Canadiens last success being back in 1993, while only older fans of the Maple Leafs will recall their last title way back in 1967.
There are genuine hopes for Canadian success this season though, with the Maple Leafs being preseason Stanley Cup betting favourites with some online sportsbooks and with the Calgary Flames and Winnipeg Jets also looking good for the NHL playoffs at present.

In 2018-19, one team has dominated the NHL regular season, with the Tampa Bay Lightning well on their way to securing the Presidents’ Trophy and the home-ice advantage that entails throughout their run in the playoffs.
At the time of writing, the Lightning have 13 points more than any other team in the regular season. In addition, they have the best Goals per Game average in the NHL (3.80), the 6th best defensive record (allowing 2.77 Goals per Game), the best Power Play % (29.1) and the second best Penalty Kill % (85.0). In Nikita Kucherov, they also have the current leading points’ scorer for the season, while Brayden Point is a prolific goalscorer. They are very worthy bookies favourites.
The Flames are the third highest scorers in the NHL this season (3.66 GPG), with Johnny Gaudreau, Sean Monahan, Elias Lindholm and Matthew Tkachuk all having already contributed well over 20 goals each. The Maple Leafs certainly have the roster to compete for the Stanley Cup, score goals (3.57 GPG) and have also impressed on the road this season. The Jets are generally fairly formidable opposition on home-ice and also have little problem in scoring (3.44 GPG).
The San Jose Sharks, the Nashville Predators, the Boston Bruins and the defending champions, the Capitals, are all worthy of consideration too.
It’s impossible to look past the Lightning as the main tips in any bet predictions for Stanley Cup 2020, so impressive have they been to date. They’ve struggled with consistency of late, but the Maple Leafs could be team to provide the main challenge to the Lightning given the quality on their roster.
