Think of sport in Canada and the chances are that the first one that springs to mind is Ice Hockey. Nothing surpasses the NHL (National Hockey League) in terms of popularity and that also applies to Canadian sports betting.

Winnipeg Jets v Nashville Predators
Central Division rivals Winnipeg Jets and Nashville Predators face each other at Bell MTS Place on Sunday evening.
In a strong division, the Predators and the Jets look set to finish first and second respectively and both look to be serious Stanley Cup contenders.
The Jets have impressive stats both in terms of goals scored and conceded, while the Predators can boast the best defensive record in the NHL.
The Predators now stand top of the NHL standings and have been in outstanding form in recent weeks, winning 14 of 15 games prior to Thursday’s fixture at home to the Toronto Maple Leafs and Saturday’s trip to Minnesota Wild. However, the Jets are strong at home and might just have enough to inflict a rare defeat on the Predators.
Pick: Winnipeg Jets

Edmonton Oilers v Los Angeles Kings
The Edmonton Oilers host the Los Angeles Kings at Rogers Place on Saturday night.
Despite the best efforts of Connor McDavid, the Oilers have failed miserably to live up to pre-season expectations and a play-off place has realistically long been beyond them. The outlook is more encouraging for the Kings, who lie third in the Pacific Division at the time of writing, albeit with the Anaheim Ducks close on their tails.
Both teams are currently struggling for any consistency in their form, but the Kings can count upon the second best defensive record in the NHL this season and with them having more to play for at this stage of the campaign, that could help them to secure the win here.
Pick: Los Angeles Kings
Montreal Canadians v Washington Capitals
The Montreal Canadians and Washington Capitals meet at the Bell Center on Saturday evening.
The Habs have long been out of the running for the play-offs and a run of just six wins in 25 games prior to trips to the Pittsburgh Penguins and Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday and Friday respectively are a good indication why.
The Capitals lead the way in the highly competitive Metropolitan Division and had won five of their last six matches prior to Thursday’s trip to the Detroit Red Wings.
With 44-goal Alexander Ovechkin leading the way for the Capitals and the Canadians still without captain Max Pacioretty due to a knee injury, the pick in this game has to be the visitors.
Pick: Washington Capitals

Winnipeg Jets v Anaheim Ducks
The Winnipeg Jets and Anaheim Ducks meet at Bell MTS Place on Friday evening.
The Jets sit second in the Central Division and have all but cemented their place in the play-offs on the back of three straight victories going into this game. The Ducks are fourth in the Pacific Division at the time of writing, but they do sit in a Western Conference Wild Card spot as things stand.
Both teams are in good recent form with three straight wins apiece, although the Ducks do travel to face the Calgary Flames on Wednesday prior to this game.
The Jets have come out on top in 27 of 36 home games this season, whereas the Ducks have lost 21 of 36 on the road. 43-goal Patrik Laine suffered an upper-body injury after blocking a shot against the Los Angeles Kings, but head coach Paul Maurice described the injury as being “not sinister”. Presuming Laine starts, the Jets look the pick in this one.
Pick: Winnipeg Jets

Nashville Predators (-161) v Toronto Maple Leafs (+135)
The Nashville Predators and Toronto Maple Leafs meet at the Bridgestone Arena on Thursday evening.
The Predators currently top the overall NHL standings and are the form team in the NHL with 14 wins in their last 15 games. The Maple Leafs are not in bad shape themselves, with four consecutive victories prior to Tuesday’s 4-3 defeat to another high-flyer, Tampa Bay Lightning.
The Predators boast the best defensive record in the NHL, conceding at a rate of just 2.4 goals per game and with the Maple Leafs facing two tough road trips within a couple of days, it’s the Predators who look the pick to extend their fine run of results.
Pick: Nashville Predators (-161)

More NHL Betting Info
There are numerous NHL betting markets available when it comes to ice hockey betting on an individual game, with the ‘Money Line’ being the most popular. This is simply a bet on which team will win.
In addition to these NHL lines, another popular betting market is the Handicap or, as it is known in NHL betting, the ‘Puck Line’. There are a range of other markets you can wager on too, such as the ‘Highest Scoring Period’ and ‘Correct Score’.
Should you prefer, you can also back the ‘3-Way Money Line’ in Regular Time, which includes the possibility of the draw.
It’s worth noting that NHL betting can be settled on the final score including overtime (including any penalty shootout if required) or excluding overtime, depending on the terms of the specific market in question.
For those willing to tie their money up for a longer period of time, you can also wager on the long-term markets over the course of the NHL season, both from a team and individual perspective.
NHL Betting Odds
The Money Line is the most popular form of NHL betting, with it being a case of simply picking the winner of any given match. For any betting novices out there, the NHL Lines prices can look somewhat confusing at first. In reality they are fairly straightforward, with the team being the favorite to win being assigned a negative value, whilst the underdog is given a positive value.
For example, in a game between the Vancouver Canucks and San Jose Sharks, the Canucks might be given odds of +150, whilst the Sharks might be available at -180. That would equate to the Canucks being the underdogs, so were you to wager $10 on them to win the match (+150), you would be looking at a profit of $15 if they won. Had you backed them with $100 and they won, you would be looking at a $150 profit. Were you to back the Sharks (-180), you would have to wager $18 to win $10 or $180 to win $100.
