The Capital One Arena hosts what could be the game of the round on Saturday evening, as the Washington Capitals (2-0-1) meet the Toronto Maple Leafs (3-1-0). It’s a game between the defending Stanley Cup holders and one of the main pretenders to the crown according to the NHL bookmakers’ odds.
The Caps had a road trip to the Prudential Center on Thursday evening to take on the New Jersey Devils (result currently unknown), but in their three games prior to that, they were averaging 6.5 goals per game and scoring on 50% of their power play opportunities. In player stats, T.J. Oshie leads the Caps with three goals, Nicklas Backstrom has four assists and John Carlson has six shots on goal.
Defensively, the Capitals are allowing 3.5 goals per game and are killing 75% of their opponents’ power plays. Goaltender Braden Holtby has allowed seven goals on 66 shots faced and the Caps have allowed three or less goals in 10 of their last 14 games.
The Maple Leafs themselves were also in Thursday night action, with a road trip to the Detroit Red Wings (again, result unknown). They went to Little Caesars Arena in good shape, having already clocked up back-to-back road victories, with the latest being a 7-4 win at the Dallas Stars on Tuesday night.
Auston Matthews and John Tavares each scored twice, with Mitch Marner, Ron Hainsey and Connor Brown also lighting the lamp in the win in Dallas. Morgan Rielly added four assists, with Marner providing three assists in addition to his goal. Goaltender Frederik Andersen made 30 saves.
Predictions for this game between two top-quality teams are not easy, but we’ll side with the Maple Leafs as our tips as they seem to be finding their form at present.
