The Washington Capitals (5-4-3) face a stern examination from the in-form Edmonton Oilers (8-4-1) at the Capital One Arena on Monday evening.
It’s been an indifferent start to the season by the Caps as defending Stanley Cup holders and they have won just three times in their last nine games to leave them in 5th position in the Metropolitan Division. Their latest loss was 4-3 in OT to the Dallas Stars on home-ice on Saturday.
Statistically the Caps are still leading the way in the NHL overall rankings for the season for both Goals per Game scored (3.80) and the Power Play PCT (35.9). On an individual basis, Alexander Ovechkin has netted 10 goals to date. The NHL stats are less favourable when looking at the Goals per Game allowed, which stand at 3.80 (28th overall) and a Penalty Kill PCT of 75.00 (23rd).
The Oilers were many pundits’ NHL predictions for the Stanley Cup last season, but failed to live up to expectations. This season they could be genuine contenders though, having won five of their last six games. The current run of form started with a 4-1 win on home-ice against the Caps and continued with Saturday’s 4-3 win on the road at the Detroit Red Wings.
Current form gives the Oilers every chance of beating the Caps at good betting odds and any team with Connor McDavid on the roster can trouble the very best. However, the Caps are the defending Stanley Cup holders and, on home-ice, they are the Money Line picks to take the points in this game.
