Tip: Shevchenko @ 3/10 with Bet365
After Dana White brought Nico Montana’s reign to an end, the UFC women’s flyweight title is up for grabs. Number one contender Valentina Shevchenko will do battle with Joanna Jedrzejczyk in a bout that, while not being a grudge match, has a bit of history to it.
This is the first time that the fighters will clash heads in the UFC but they have fought before on three occasions in Muay Thai competition with Shevchenko winning every time.
While Jedrzejczyk insists that this won’t play on her mind going into the fight, there is little doubt as to who should be regarded as the favourite here. Shevchenko trained with Rose Namajunas ahead of her fights with Jedrzejczyk for the Strawweight title, both of which Namajunas won. This could be an indication that Shevchenko is a bogey opponent for Jedrzejczyk.
Shevchenko has been holding hard sparring sessions with ‘Thug Rose’ in the build-up to this fight and appears confident that she will get a win. Speaking ahead of the fight, she’s gone on the record to say that she believes their previous fights will ‘affect’ Jedrzejczyk.
Her last win, via a rear-naked choke, over Priscila Cachoeira earned her a Performance of the Night award. The odds aren’t great on a Shevchenko win with Bet365 offering a high 3/10 on her to win.
Before her defeat to Namajunas, Jedrzejczyk was the number one pound-for-pound MMA fighter in the world. So maybe we shouldn’t be too quick to write her off. On her day, she’s capable of knocking out any opponent with her precise strikes and kicks. While we don’t see her winning this one, the odds on a victory are a tempting 9/4 with Betfair.
