The USA take on France in the quarterfinals of the FIBA Basketball World Cup at the Dongfeng Nissan Cultural and Sports Center on Wednesday evening (local time). The winners will face Argentina, who surprisingly eliminated Serbia, in the semifinals.

Team USA (the two-time defending World Cup champions) came into the tournament as strong favourites to win it and after five straight wins in China to date, that remains the case. In their last couple of games the USA have beaten a couple of decent teams in Greece (69-53) and Brazil (89-73). The French are unlikely to have caused any sleepless nights among the American roster.

For their part, France has won four of their five games, the last two of which have been incredibly close affairs. The French just shaded Lithuania 78-75, before then losing narrowly to Australia 100-98 on Sunday evening.

The loss to the Australians has to be put in perspective, as the Boomers recently inflicted a first loss in 13 years on the USA in a pre-World Cup warm-up match, with a 98-94 victory in Melbourne to end the American’s 78-game winning streak.

Even so, you’ll be hard pressed to find too many USA vs France predictions backing France in this game. The betting odds certainly favour the USA, who are at -380 (1.26) with bet365, while France are +300 (4.00) at Betway

Those odds are too short to hold much appeal for USA backers, so we’ll turn to the Point Spread for the tip in this game. The USA -8.0 are -110 (1.90) with bet365, with France +8.0 also on offer at -110 (1.90) with bet365
