The men’s title is, once again, widely regarded as being a three-horse race between Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. These legends of the game have no less than 54 Grand Slam singles titles between them – Federer 20, Nadal 18 and Djokovic 16. Such is their dominance, that the veteran trio has also won the last 11 Grand Slam tournaments between them.
Federer has five US Open titles to his name (won in a single stretch between 2004 and 2008), while Djokovic and Nadal have three wins apiece.
Novak Djokovic a worthy favourite
Defending champion Novak Djokovic goes into the tournament as the defending champion and having won four of the last five Grand Slam events. On that basis the Serbian is certainly a worthy favourite to retain the championship.
There will eventually be a changing of the guard at the top of the rankings in men’s tennis, with the current crop of young pretenders headed by the likes of Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev, Stefanos Tsitsipas and the Canadian duo of Felix Auger Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov.
Whether any are capable of ending the dominance of the “Big 3” in a Grand Slam tournament quite yet looks doubtful, although the US Open is the one Grand Slam event that the lesser mortals have had some success in over the past decade, with titles for Juan Martin del Potro, Andy Murray, Marin Cilic and Stan Wawrinka.
Serena favourite in the Women’s event
The women’s event looks far more difficult to call, with at least a dozen genuine contenders for the title. Defending champion Naomi Osaka of Japan is again seen as a strong contender, but it’s Serena Williams who goes into the tournament as the favourite.
Incredibly it’s now 20 years since Williams won her first US Open (and the first of her 23 Grand Slam titles to date). Her last title was the Australian Open in January 2017 though and since her return to tennis after giving birth, she’s lost three Grand Slam finals (two at Wimbledon and one at the US Open last year).
In addition, Williams was recently forced to retire in the first set of the final of the Rogers Cup (aka Canadian Open) against Canadian teenager Bianca Andreescu due to back spasms. The problem persisted at the Cincinnati Open, forcing her to withdraw after the first round. That’s not exactly a reason to back a player who will be 38 years old at the end of September.
Simona Halep could prove to be a better betting option, with the Romanian having beaten Williams in straight sets in under an hour in this year’s Wimbledon final. If looking at recent form, Rogers Cup winner Bianca Andreescu and Cincinnati Open victor Madison Keys have to come into consideration.
