The middleweight clash is the main event at UFC Fight Night 150, in which the 39 year-old Souza has apparently been promised a middleweight title shot if he can defeat Hermansson.
Souza is known for his background in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and submission wrestling and has never lost a fight on the ground. Although he can trade blows in a standup fight if required, Souza’s at his best on the canvass.
The veteran beat Chris Weidman by TKO in his last fight in November 2018 at UFC 230, where both fighters traded violent strikes in a bloodbath for three rounds until Jacare landed a shot toward the top of the head that produced a KO.
Hermansson is an aggressive standup MMA fighter, who’s constantly looking to force the issue and throw strong overhand strikes. He’s perfectly capable of taking the fight to the ground too, but that might not be wise against a wrestler of Souza’s pedigree.
“The Joker” stands 6 feet, 1 inch tall, the same as his opponent. However, he has a 77.5 inch reach, which gives him a 5.5 inch reach advantage over Jacare.
The 30 year-old Hermansson comes into this fight after the biggest victory of his career, which was achieved in 49 seconds via a guillotine choke over the veteran David Branch just last month. In fact, Hermansson will be making a 28-day turnaround between fights.
The Swede comes into this fight at short notice, after Yoel Romero was forced to withdraw due to illness.
