The Toronto Maple Leafs (6-0-1) and the Pittsburgh Penguins (2-1-2) meet on Thursday evening at the Scotiabank Arena.
It’s been a superb start to the season for the Maple Leafs, who have already amassed 12 points from their opening 7 games. Many pundits preseason NHL predictions for the Stanley Cup, the Maple Leafs are living up to those expectations so far.
They recorded their fifth consecutive win with a 4-1 victory at the Scotiabank Arena against the Los Angeles Kings on Monday. They also took their goal tally for the season to 33, which is the highest in the NHL this season by some margin.
It’s been a less impressive start to the season for the Penguins, with just a couple of wins from their opening five games. Worryingly when taking their next opponents into consideration, all three of their losses to date have come against Canadian opposition, including two defeats to the Montreal Canadiens.
The Penguins last game saw them go down to a 3-2 OT loss at the PPG Paints Arena to the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday evening.
Neither of these teams has been particularly strong defensively this season, with the Maple Leafs allowing 23 goals at a rate of 3.29 per game, while the Penguins have allowed 19 goals at 3.80 per game.
Taking into account home-ice advantage and the current form of the two teams, the Maple Leafs have to be the picks going into this game. The Penguins were the top team in the NHL a year or two back, but now the odds favour the Maple Leafs.
Pick: Money Line – Toronto Maple Leafs (-140)
