The NHL season gets underway with the Toronto Maple Leafs hosting the Montreal Canadiens at the Scotiabank Arena on Wednesday evening.
The rivalry between the Maple Leafs and the Canadiens dates all the way back to 1917, making it the oldest rivalry in the NHL. Of course it’s not just an on-ice rivalry between the teams either, but one between the cities of Toronto and Montreal.
The Maple Leafs go into the 2018-19 campaign as pre-season favourites for the Stanley Cup, with an already talented squad having been further augmented by the signing of ex-New York Islander John Tavares to a $77 million, seven-year contract. The 28-year-old collected 84 points (37 goals, 47 assists) for the struggling Isles last season.
One key player who will be absent for the Leafs on Wednesday is Swedish right winger William Nylander, with the unsigned restricted free agent yet to sign a new contract.
The Habs finished 6th in the Atlantic Division last season (29-40-13) and few predictions see much improvement this term.
The teams have already faced off against each twice during the preseason, with each team banking an away victory. The Habs won 5-1 at the Scotiabank Arena, before the Maple Leafs gained a 5-3 victory at the Bell Centre. There are often a few goals when these two teams meet, so that’s our NHL prediction for this game.
