The Swiss beat defending champions Finland 5-2 in their final Group A game on New Year’s Eve to finish second in the group behind Sweden.
The win was all the more impressive as Switzerland went into the game missing some key players.
Defenceman Nico Gross sat out for a second straight game with an upper body injury, while forward Joel Salzgeber missed out with a lower-body injury. They also rested first-choice goaltender Luca Hollenstein. All three players are expected to return against the Russians.
The win against the Finns featured two goals from Fabian Berri, with Gaetan Jobin, Simon Knak, and Valentin Nussbaumer also getting on the scoresheet for Switzerland. David Aebischer and Sandro Schmid contributed two assists apiece. Stephane Charlin made 36 stops.

Russia avoided the possibility of a relegation series against Kazakhstan and booked their own quarter-final berth in the process by comprehensively beating Germany 6-1 in their final Group B game on New Year’s Eve.
Kirill Marchenko scored twice and had three assists for the Russians, despite only being on the ice for barely 13 minutes in total. Pavel Dorofeyev also scored twice and there were further goals for Grigori Denisenko and Dmitri Voronkov. Yaroslav Askarov made 22 saves.
