The Swedes are the only team yet to lose a game at the tournament this year and were in devastating form in their quarter-final tie against host nation the Czech Republic, routing them 5-0 on Thursday evening. (see highlights video below)
It was an 11th straight win over the Czechs for Sweden at the U20 tournament, dating back some 17 years.
Nils Hoglander scored twice for Sweden and there were further goals from Hugo Gustafsson, Victor Soderstrom and David Gustafsson. Hugo Alnefelt made 23 saves.
The Russians came through their quarter-final against Switzerland earlier on Thursday with a 3-1 win in which they outshot the Swiss 36-15.
Dmitri Voronkov scored twice power plays for the Russians, whose other goal came from Alexander Khovanov. Grigori Denisenko provided a pair of assists and 17 year-old goaltender Yaroslav Askarov made 14 saves.
As a point of reference, Russia lost their opening Group B game at the tournament 4-3 to the Czechs. The host nation may have had the adrenalin pumping for their opening game, but it was still a shock result. For their part, Sweden beat Switzerland 5-2 in a Group A game earlier in the tournament.
