Sweden meet Finland in the Bronze medal game at the 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship at the Ostravar Arena on Sunday afternoon.
Sweden suffered the heartbreak of a 5-4 semi-final loss in overtime to Russia on Saturday, in a game in which they took an early lead after just 16 seconds and then rallied from 3-1 down in the first period to move into a 4-3 lead.
Rasmus Sandin starred for the Swedes with two goals and two assists in regulation time. There was also a goal and an assist apiece from Samuel Fagemo and Nils Lundkvist, while Linus Nassen also had two assists. Hugo Alnefelt made 39 saves.
Sweden, who went into the semi-finals as the only unbeaten team in the tournament this year, beat Finland 3-2 in OT in what was the opening group game for both teams.
It’s been a mixed tournament for defending champions Finland, who also lost 5-2 to Switzerland in the group stage, but beat the fancied USA 1-0 in the quarter-finals.
In the semi-finals they were routed 5-0 by Canada. The game was effectively over after just 3:55, as the Canadians raced into a 3-0 lead and any hopes of a Finland revival were extinguished when they went 4-0 down after 14:49 of the first period. Justus Annonen saved 34 shots for the Finns.
