Zverev booked his place in the Australian Open quarter-finals for the first time by beating his childhood friend, Andrey Rublev, 6-4 6-4 6-4.
In doing so, Zverev ended the Russian’s 15-match winning streak that saw him win titles in Doha and Adelaide to start the new season.
Zverev has yet to drop a set in this year’s tournament and won 49 of his 54 first-service points and hit 11 aces against Rublev. This has been an impressive turnaround from a player who was struggling badly with his service just a couple of weeks ago.
The 22 year-old German has won on both occasions these players have met previously, although they haven’t faced each other for some time. Zverev won in the final at the St. Petersburg Open 2016 in three sets, 62 36 75 and then again in the last 16 of the Miami Masters in 2017, 4-6 6-2 6-1.
Stan Wawrinka, the 34 year-old Swiss veteran, beat the much-fancied fourth seed Daniil Medvedev 6-2 2-6 4-6 7-6 (7-2) 6-2 in the fourth round, so gaining revenge for his US Open 2019 quarter-final loss to the Russian in September.

In terms of Australian Open quarter final predictions, the younger man has had a less arduous route to the last eight and seems to be back to somewhere near his best. On that basis, he is the tip to win here.
