A few weeks ago, there was no way the Blue Bombers were going to be favoured over the Stampeders. But Winnipeg has simply been playing better football lately. Thanks to a combination of defence and efficient play from pivot Matt Nichols, they’re riding a four-game winning streak into this weekend’s contest.
Calgary, on the other hand, has gone from being the team to beat to just another squad. They are 2-2 in their last four. But they have lost their last two and nearly lost to Montreal. It would be unfair to put all the struggles on the shoulders of their pivot, Bo Levi Mitchell. But he has not played well the last three weeks (four touchdowns and five interceptions).
A combination of turnovers and sloppy play in all facets of the game have cost the Stampeders. While they may still be able to pull out a win over Montreal, they aren’t going to play the Alouettes in the postseason.
So—who’s going to win this week?
As nice as it would be to think the Stampeders will get their act together, it is hard to have any faith that they will. The offence is not playing with a sense of urgency or purpose anymore and seems to be struggling against teams with decent defences—which the Blue Bombers have.
Matt Nichols isn’t a guy that encourages a lot of faith and optimism either. But this week his play is more encouraging than Bo Levi Mitchell’s. Take the Blue Bombers to win (-127) over the Stampeders (+113). However, expect this one to be close; they may not cover the spread (2).
As for the over/under, take the over (53.5).
