The Russia-born 21 year-old American Kenin ended the run of 15 year-old sensation Coco Gauff (who had beaten the defending champion, Naomi Osaka to reach the fourth round) to reach the last eight, winning 6-7 6-3 6-0.
The 14th seed hadn’t dropped a set at this year’s tournament in the three rounds prior to that. This is now the furthest she has ever gone in a Grand Slam event, following her run to the fourth round of the French Open last year.
Ons Jabeur reached the quarter-finals after she defeated China’s Wang Qiang (who knocked out tournament favourite Serena Williams in the previous round) 7-6 (7-4) 6-1 in the fourth round.
The 25 year-old Tunisian is currently ranked 78th by the WTA and has never been beyond the third round of a Grand Slam event before this year. Jabeur as she has already defeated the likes of Johanna Konta and Caroline Wozniacki.
