Kenin and Muguruza both came through the semi-final matches in which they were the underdogs, with each of them showing great resilience to do so.
The 21-year-old Kenin (a Russia-born, Florida-raised American), beat top seed and home favourite Ashleigh Barty in straight sets in her semi-final, winning 7-6 (8-6) 7-5. Kenin saved two set points in each set.
The unseeded Spaniard saved four set points in the opening set and twice came back from a break down in the second to beat Halep, who hadn’t dropped a set in the tournament prior to Thursday’s match.
Prior to beating Halep, Muguruza also had straight sets wins against Ukrainian fifth seed Elina Svitolina, Dutch ninth seed Kiki Bertens and Russian 30th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
Head To Head
This pair has only met once previously, but it was only recently. On that occasion, Kenin beat Muguruza 6-0 2-6 6-2 at the China Open in September last year.
