Serbia face Canada in the quarter-finals of the inaugural ATP Cup 2020 at the Ken Rosewall Arena (the Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre) in Sydney on Friday.
Serbia claimed their place in the last eight after coming through Group A by winning all three of their ties against South Africa, France and Chile.
They won seven of the matches in those ties, with just two losses and Novak Djokovic won all three of his singles matches without dropping a set.
In addition to current world no. 2 Djokovic, the Serbian team consists of Dusan Lajovic, Nikola Cacic, Viktor Troicki and Nikola Milojevic.
The 29 year-old Lajovic is currently ranked no. 34 in the world and his match, first up against Felix Auger-Aliassime is probably going to be pivotal to Canadian hopes.
It was a much closer call for Canada, who only scraped into the quarter-finals on account of being the second of the two best runners-up in the group stage. They finished as runners-up in Group F to host nation Australia, having beaten Greece and Germany.
The 19 year-old Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime has lost two of his three singles matches at the tournament to date and has also played in all three of Canada’s doubles matches (winning two of them). If the world no. 21 can make his ranking count against Lajovic, it would put Canada on the front foot.
The other singles match will see 20 year-old rising star Denis Shapovalov look to avenge his 6-3 6-4 defeat by Djokovic in the final at the Rolex Paris Masters back in November 2019.
