Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (51-1-2) takes on defending WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev (34-3-1) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Paradise, Nevada on Saturday night.
Canelo will be making his debut at Light Heavyweight as he looks to win a championship belt in a fourth weight division. He’s coming into this fight off a Unanimous Decision victory over the American Daniel Jacobs in May, where he retained his WBA (Super), WBC, The Ring, and lineal middleweight titles and won the IBF middleweight belt.
The 36 year-old Russian Sergey Kovalev is now past his prime, as indicated by the fact that his three professional defeats have come in his last seven fights. He has a height and reach advantage over Canelo, but the Mexican will counter that by concentrating on attacking his opponent’s body and looking for a KO.
Kovalev is a dangerous puncher and the bigger man, but the 29 year-old Mexican is the biggest box office draw in the game and he is looking to further enhance his reputation and legacy here.
