Russia meet Slovakia in the quarter-finals of the World Junior Ice Hockey Championships 2018-19 at the Rogers Arena in Vancouver on Wednesday evening.

The Russians are the only team at these finals who won all four of their group games in regulation time and they saved the best till last in impressively recovering from going behind to an early goal against the host nation, Canada, before claiming a well deserved 2-1 win courtesy of a superb decisive goal from Pavel Shen.

In truth, the Russians didn’t particularly impress in their opening three group games against Denmark, Switzerland and the Czech Republic, although they did get the requisite win on each occasion.

In truth, the Russians didn’t particularly impress in their opening three group games against Denmark, Switzerland and the Czech Republic, although they did get the requisite win on each occasion.

It’s been a good team effort from Russia to date, rather than them playing as a collection of talented individuals, which has often been the case in the past.  Defensively they allowed just six goals in their four group games, so the Slovakians will have to make the most of their opportunities against them.

The Slovakians only won one of their four Group B games, an 11-2 drubbing of Kazakhstan in their final game. They only scored a total of four goals in their other three games.

That resounding win over Kazakhstan ensured that they qualified for the quarter-finals and avoided the relegation playoffs, which was probably the main priority for them coming into these finals.

Slovakia’s penalty kill is the tournament’s second-worst (68.4%), which doesn’t bode well against a team of Russia’s quality. Few World Junior Ice Hockey predictions will forecast anything other than a Russia win in this game. It’s difficult to make much of a case for Slovakia here, so Russia has to be the tips on the Money Line odds at -455 with 888 sport.
