France’s Pierre-Hugues Herbert faces Canada’s Denis Shapovalov in the 1st round of the Rogers Cup (aka ATP Montreal). The match is scheduled to take place on Monday evening.
These two players have faced each other twice previously. Most recently they met on an indoor court in the quarterfinals of the 2019 Open Sud de France in Montpellier in February, with Herbert winning 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) en route to the final.
Prior to that their only previous meeting was in Canberra in 2017 (challenger play), which was a match that Shapovalov won in three sets (3-6, 6-4, 6-4). That match was played on an outside hard court, which is perhaps a more useful guide to Monday’s game.
Although, Shapovalov’s overall record in 2019 is a losing one at 13-16, he has had more success on hard courts with a record of 8-4. By contrast, Herbert’s record for the year is 24-19, but his hard court record is 4-6.
