Wednesday evening sees the Ottawa Senators (1-0-2) host the Philadelphia Flyers (1-0-1) in the first of a five-game homestand at the Canadian Tire Centre in which the Senators will hope to build a platform for the new NHL season.
The Senators come into the game on the back of Monday’s 6-3 loss away to the Boston Bruins at TD Garden, where the Senators’ inexperienced defence was again exploited.
It’s early days yet, but some combination of Max Lajoie-Cody Ceci/Thomas Chabot-Dylan DeMelo/Mark Borowiecki/Chris Wideman needs to control play inside the Senators’ zone or NHL predictions of a season of struggle look likely to come true. The reality is that consistency is likely to be an issue this season with youngsters such as Chabot, Lajoie, Brady Tkachuk, Alex Formenton and Colin White in the ranks.
The defeat to the Bruins did come after the impressive 5-3 win away to the Toronto Maple Leafs which, although owing much to a strong goaltending performance from Craig Anderson, does show the potential in the Ottawa team.
The Flyers were in action on Tuesday night on home-ice at the Wells Fargo Center against the San Jose Sharks (result unknown at the time of writing), so there’s precious little rest for them between games and travel is involved too. The Flyers started their season with 5-2 win away to last season’s Stanley Cup upstarts, Vegas Golden Knights, but followed that up with a 5-2 loss on the road at Colorado Avalanche.
They Flyers represent a tough challenge for the Senators, but with the visitor’s games coming thick and fast, the +110 for the Senators on the Money Line with 888sport makes them the picks here.
