It’s been an encouraging start to the NHL season for both of these teams, which certainly goes against the preseason predictions of many pundits and fans, who envisaged little in the way of success for either team. It’s early days yet of course, but the signs are promising.
In their last game on Monday evening, the Senators claimed an impressive 4-1 win in coming from a goal down to beat the Dallas Stars at the Canadian Tire Centre.
The Senators have scored goals with relative ease so fare his season, averaging exactly 4.00 Goals per Game to leave them 5th in the overall NHL standings. Defensively they’ve been a little less impressive in allowing 3.67 Goals per Game (8th highest in the standings).
The Canadiens have already twice beaten the Pittsburgh Penguins this season and also took the Toronto Maple Leafs to OT. They easily beat the Detroit Red Wings 7-3 on Monday evening, having been 6-1 ahead at the end of the 2nd period.
The Habs were also in Wednesday night action prior to this game, when they beat the St. Louis Blues 3-2. Prior to that, the Canadiens had a 3.40 Goals per Game scoring average, leaving them 13th in the overall NHL standings, while conceding at a perfectly respectable rate of 2.60 Goals per Game (an impressive 23rd overall).
The Senators will go into this game with the benefit of a couple of extra days rest, but the Habs perhaps have the greater momentum and have also been the more solid team defensively. They are therefore the tips to win here.
