Oleksandr “The Nail” Gvozdyk (16-0) fights Doudou Ngumbu (38-8) in the first defence of his WBC World Light-Heavyweight title at the 2300 Arena in Philadelphia on Saturday night.
The 31 year-old Ukrainian Gvozdyk was a 2012 Olympic bronze medalist as an amateur. He won the WBC World Light-Heavyweight title in Quebec City in December when, despite being behind on two of the three judges’ scorecards, he delivered an 11th round KO to champion Adonis “Superman” Stevenson. Haitian Canadian Stevenson, who reigned as champion for 5½ years, suffered a severe brain injury as a result and remains hospitalized.

The undefeated Gvozdyk has recorded 13 KOs in his 16 fights to date, although it’s worth noting that Ngumbu has only lost once in his career to a KO.
The 37 year-old Congolese-born French national Ngumbu (38-8, 14 KOs) caused a major upset when outpointing unbeaten Yoann Kongolo last May. The result is that he finally gets an opportunity to fight for a major world title against Gvozdyk.
Ngumbu doesn’t possess the punching power of Gvozdyk, having only recorded 14 KOs in his 46 fight career.
