Djokovic beat Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 in his semifinal on Saturday, in what was his ninth win in 10 meetings with world number 27.
Canadian 20 year-old Shapovalov, ranked 28th in the world, claimed his place in the final after second seed Rafael Nadal withdrew from their scheduled semifinal clash because of injury. The Spanish 19-time Grand Slam winner pulled out with an abdominal strain just before his match against Shapovalov was due to begin.
Nadal’s retirement means that Djokovic will now end the year as the world’s highest ranked player, whatever the outcome of the match against Shapovalov.
