Novak Djokovic capable of straight sets victory over Lucas Pouille in Australian Open semi-final in Melbourne on Friday.
Top seed Novak Djokovic faces France’s Lucas Pouille in the Australian Open 2019 Men’s semi-final as the clear favourite to progress and maintain his bid to secure a record seventh Australian Open title.
Pouille, the 28th seed at these finals, is in his first ever Grand Slam semi-final, having caused a minor upset in defeating the in-form Canadian Milos Raonic in four sets in the last eight. Before this year, Pouille had never won a match at the Australian Open, losing in the 1st round on all four previous occasions when he entered the main draw.
Pouille has never previously faced the 14-time Grand Slam winner, although the pair have practiced together previously. The Frenchman, whose game has improved since the appointment of Amelie Mauresmo as his coach, goes into the semi-final with little to lose and could take advantage of any fitness worries his older opponent might have.
The Serbian has been having some issues with a back problem, but should benefit from the early finish of his quarter-final, in which Japan’s Kei Nishikori was forced to retire injured with a thigh problem in the second set of the match.
Djokovic hasn’t been at his imperial best at these finals to date, but he’s also never looked to be under any serious threat of elimination. With the additional rest from his shortened quarter-final, he should be more than capable of maintaining his record of winning every Australian Open semi-final he’s appeared in.
Unsurprisingly, Djokovic is a red-hot -1200 favourite with William Hill to win the match, with Pouille rated a +1000 chance with 888sport. A straight sets win for Djokovic could be the better betting option here though at -187.50 with Betway.
