Raonic, who has only played a limited number of matches since summer last year as a result of a back injury, faces a potentially difficult customer in world no. 48 Albot of Moldova in the opening round.
Last year, Raonic, 29, reached the Australian Open quarterfinals, where he was eventually beaten by France’s Lucas Pouille 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 6-7 (2-7) 6-4.
Raonic is currently ranked world no. 35 as a result of his injury lay-off, having previously been as high as world number 3.
Raonic was last in action in Doha where he lost in two straight set tie-breaks, 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (7-4) to France’s Corentin Moutet in the 2nd round of the Qatar ExxonMobil Open on the 8th January. That’s the only match the Canadian has played in 2020 to date.
Radu Albot went out in the 2nd round of the tournament last year, losing in straight sets, 6-1 7-6 (7-2) 6-3, to Spain’s Fernando Verdasco.
The Moldovan has struggled for form in 2020 to date, losing all three matches played, including a 6-2 6-2 straight sets defeat to Britain’s Dan Ward in the ATP Cup 2020 for his country here in Melbourne a fortnight ago.
