Canada’s Milos Raonic will take on Lucas Pouille of France at the quarter-final stage of the Men’s event at the Australian Open 2019.
These two players have met each other on three previous occasions, with Raonic winning each time in straight sets. One of those meetings was at the 2016 Australian Open, when Raonic prevailed 6-1 6-4 6-4 in a 1st round match.
Raonic was once seen as the frontrunner to succeed the established order at the top of the men’s game, but at the age of 28 he has now been surpassed by other, younger players in terms of expectation.
Perhaps the relative lack of pressure on him is working in his favour, as Raonic has already beaten some top-quality opposition in reaching the last eight of this year’s tournament, accounting for home favourite Nick Kyrgios in the 1st round, then 2014 Australian Open champion Stan Wawrinka in the 2nd round and the highly-rated young German Alexander Zverev (the 2018 ATP Finals winner) in the last 16.
Lucas Pouille’s progress at this year’s event has featured lower profile opposition, but he did recover from losing the opening set to see off Croatia’s Borna Coric in four sets to reach this stage.
Given the history between the two players, the fact that the hard court surface should favour Raonic and the opposition he has already seen off in reaching the last eight, it’s no great surprise that the Canadian is a strong favourite on the Money Line betting odds to reach the semi-finals at -500 with Betfair Sportsbook, with Pouille at +400 with bet365*.
Those Milos Raonic odds are very short so, when it comes to predictions, perhaps it’s worth trusting in Raonic’s current form and to anticipate history repeating itself with another straight sets victory, which you can bet at odds of +110 with 888sport.
