Raonic had a convincing 6-3 6-2 in over Britain’s Cameron Norrie in the first round, with 14 aces posted and no breaks on his serve. Prior to beating Norrie, the big-serving 28 year-old Canadian hadn’t won a match since the Rogers Cup first round back in August, although he’s also had injury issues to contend with.
Thiem received a bye in the opening round of this tournament and is a man in form, having won the Vienna Open title last weekend in his homeland when beating Diego Schwartzman 3-6 6-4 6-3 in the final.
In the head-to-head meetings between the pair, Raonic has won two of the three matches, although both those victories came back in 2016. They last met at the semifinal stage of the ATP Masters 1000 Indian Wells in March this year, with the Austrian winning 7-6(3) 6-7(3) 6-4 on his way to the title.
