The CONCACAF Gold Cup 2019 final will feature Mexico against the USA at Soldier Field in Chicago on Sunday evening.
It’s no great surprise to see these two regional soccer powerhouses contesting the 2019 CONCACAF final, and there’s likely to be even more of an edge in this match than usual given the ongoing political tensions between these two neighbouring countries.
Mexico has had a somewhat more arduous route to the final, having been taken to extra-time by Haiti in their semi-final before a Raul Jimenez goal gave them a 1-0 victory. Prior to that, in the quarter-finals they were taken all the way to a penalty shoot-out before finally beating Costa Rica after a 1-1 draw.
The USA have won all five of their games in the tournament in regulation time. They beat Jamaica 3-1 in their semi-final, although in scoring the Reggae Boyz became the first team to score a goal against the Americans in the tournament to date. A 1-0 win over Curacao 1-0 at the quarter-final stage was also hard work for the USA.
