Lewis “The Sandman” Ritson (17-1) fights German Argentino “El Correntino” Benitez (21-3) at the Copper Box Arena in London on Saturday night. On the line is the WBA Inter-Continental super-lightweight title.
Initially Ritson was scheduled to put his British lightweight title on the line when fighting Andy Townend at the Metro Arena in his home city of Newcastle this weekend, but he’s now moved up to super-lightweight and will now fight the Argentinean Benitez in London instead.
“The Sandman” is moving up a division after the first defeat of his career, against Francesco Patera of Belgium, by whom he was outpointed on a split decision when they fought for the then vacant European lightweight belt.
Prior to that Ritson held the Lonsdale belt outright after making three consecutive defences against Joe Murray, Scott Cardle and Paul Hyland Jr., having won British lightweight title against Robbie Barrett back in October 2017.
Should Ritson see off Benitez, he will be targeting the winner of Joe Hughes vs Robbie Davies Jr fight for the British and European titles. Of Ritson’s 17 wins, 11 have come by KO.
This will be the first occasion on which Benitez has fought outside of Argentina, so this is going to be a big test of his character, let alone his ability in the ring.
Prior to his loss to Patera, Ritson had six straight wins via KO/TKO. Of Benitez’s 21 victories, nine have come by KO, but his last six fights all went the distance (and he’s lost two of his last four bouts).
Ritson v Argentino Benitez Betting Lines
Boxing betting predictions ahead of this fight will almost universally point towards a Ritson win, with the main question being how long will it take Ritson to dispatch his opponent.
The line on a Ritson win holds little appeal with odds of -2000 at Betway Sports (Benitez is +900 with 888sport), so the tip here is for the Round Group Betting and Ritson to win in rounds 4 to 6.
