Jussier Formiga (23-5-0) takes on Joseph “The Beefcake” Benavidez (27-5-0) in a Flyweight bout at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Saturday night as part of the UFC on ESPN 3 card.
These two elite flyweights met previously in 2013, with this fight giving the 34 year-old Formiga the opportunity to seek vengeance over Benavidez.
The Brazilian Formiga is currently on a four-fight winning streak coming into this fight, having submitted Ben Nguyen and Ulka Sasaki before earning Unanimous Decision wins over Sergio Pettis and Deiveson Figueiredo.
After 18 months out followed by a decision loss to Pettis, the 34 year-old American Benavidez has returned to form with a TKO win over Alex Perez and a Unanimous Decision win over Dustin Ortiz.
Formiga is a top-class grappler, with a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Judo helping him to 10 submission wins and 13 Decision victories in his career. However, there are zero knockouts on his win record, so if Benavidez keeps this fight on the feet, it’s difficult to see how Formiga will prevail.
Jussier Formiga vs Joseph Benavidez Predictions
Joseph Benavidez is more of a well-rounded flyweight than Formiga, as is shown by his record of seven KOs, nine submissions and 11 decisions in his winning fights to date. He himself also an excellent grappler, but if he can largely stay clear of the mat, it should be to his advantage given his edge in terms of speed and technique.
The more versatile American looks to have the advantage when it comes to making our UFC betting picks for this fight and he is the tip to win on that basis.
