The festive season offers up a huge treat when UFC 232 closes out the year with a special fight card headlined by a Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson rematch. When the pair fought before, Gustafsson giving Jones one of the toughest fights of his career.

As he mentioned many times at the press conference, he doesn’t believe he should have lost that fight. An all-time classic, it went the distance before Jones won unanimously via the judges’ scorecards.

As with so many fights that go the distance in the UFC, that one really could have gone either way. Gustafsson looked to be the perfect foil for Jones, a phenom who’s never been beaten and whose only loss came via disqualification.

A physical match for Jones, Gustafsson became the first fighter to ever take Jones to the mat – and did it repeatedly throughout the bout. His own takedown defence, meanwhile, was flawless, batting Jones away until the dying embers of the contest.

Back then, they were fighting for Jones’ Light Heavyweight belt. That would still be Jones’ belt if it weren’t for the litany of controversies that have plagued his career over the last few years. DC held the belt instead but now it’s up for grabs again.

Will the sharp-edged Jones be able to take back what he claims is rightfully his after 15 months away from the sport? Or will it be third time lucky for Gustafsson, a fighter who has swung and missed in two title fights prior to this?

It’s a hard one to call. How can we advise you to back against a winning machine? Well, we can look at the odds and become swayed, that’s how. Jones is the heavy favourite for this bout and we think that Gustafsson has earned the right to be backed by fanciful punters.

We advise you to go for a Gustafsson win at +240 with Bet365. Alternatively, you may prefer a different prediction, such as whether the fight will go the distance. We think it very well might and odds of 21/20 with Betfair have us rooting for another slobberknocker for the ages.
