The Portuguese 30 year-old Joao Sousa currently has an ATP ranking of 58. He was last in action in Basel nearly three months ago, when he lost 6-1 6-4 to Alexei Popyrin in the qualifiers.
The 29 year-old Canadian Vasek Pospisil is currently ranked number 146 in the world. Pospisil reached the 1st round of this tournament after coming through a couple of qualifying rounds where he defeated Kiranpal Pannu 6-2 6-4 and Holger Vitus Nodskov Rune 7-5 6-1.
Head To Head
The pair have faced each other five times down the years, with Sousa leading 4-1 on the head-to-head stats. That said, it was Pospisil who won their most recent encounter at the Shanghai Masters in October last year, winning 6-3 7-5 in the second round (Pospisil went out to tournament winner Daniil Medvedev in two closely fought sets in the third round).
With this being Sousa’s first match since October, there has to be question marks as to whether the Portuguese player will be able to shake off any rust in this match.
Pospisil can be an inconsistent singles’ player at times, but he won when the pair last met and there are just too many risks attached to backing Sousa on this occasion.
