Having comprehensively beaten the 5th seed Elina Svitolina 6-1 6-2 in the third round, Muguruza overcame a second Top 10 player when she ousted the 9th seed Dutch player Kiki Bertens 6-3 6-3 in the fourth round.
The unseeded 26 year-old Spaniard has been in excellent form, as she now looks to progress to the semi-finals of the Australian Open for the first time.
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova followed up her impressive 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (7-3) win over 2nd seed Karolina Pliskova in the third round by beating 17th seed Angelique Kerber 6-7 (5-7) 7-6 (7-4) 6-2 in the fourth round.
Pavlyuchenkova is in familiar territory, having progressed to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open for the second consecutive year and for the third time in the last four years.
The problem for the 28 year-old Russian is that she is now a five-time Grand Slam quarter-finalist, but has yet to go beyond this stage.
