There’s an all-Canadian clash in the first round of the Men’s singles at Wimbledon, with Félix Auger-Aliassime taking on Vasek Pospisil on Monday afternoon (local time).
The 29 year-old Vasek Pospisil has a current world ranking of 132, but was as high as number 25 in the world back in January 2014. His greatest success in a Grand Slam singles tournament came at Wimbledon back in 2015, when he reached the quarter-final stage before losing to Andy Murray in straight sets. However, since then he’s suffered three consecutive first round defeats in SW19, London.
Pospisil’s qualification at this year’s Wimbledon is down to his Protected Ranking, whereby players injured for a minimum of six months can ask for a protected ranking, which is based on their average ranking during the first three months of their injury. This can then be used to enter tournaments’ main draws or qualifying competitions when coming back from injury.
Auger-Aliassime is currently at an all-time high of 21 in the world tennis rankings and is seeded 19 at Wimbledon this year. Although Auger-Aliassime’s preferred surface is clay, he has a strong serve, a decent volley and great athleticism, so he is well suited to grass. He also comes into Wimbledon 2019 on the back of a semi-final appearance at Queen’s Club a week ago.
