Spread: Roughriders by 4
Money Line: Eskimos +160; Rough Riders -190
If there was ever a time for a big win, this week is it for the Edmonton Eskimos. After getting embarrassed last week against the Blue Bombers, they are now in danger of missing out on the playoffs. The loss dropped them into a tie for third with Winnipeg but only two points ahead of the last-place BC Lions.
Start streaking the wrong way and they could miss the postseason this year.
So—what went wrong? Well, when you ride your offence, specifically the play of your pivot like they do, bad things happen when he has an off game. To be fair, he wasn’t the only one who played poorly last week. But he has to throw for more than 154 yards and can’t commit three turnovers (the team had seven).
They are playing a defence this week that is comparable to Winnipeg’s; the Roughriders allow 6.5 fewer yards passing a game than the Blue Bombers. Earlier this season, Reilly didn’t have a great day against the Roughriders (13-27 for 257 yards and a touchdown). But it was good enough to get the win (26-19).
When it comes down to it, the winner is going to be the team who can stop the other’s pivot. Roughriders pivot Zach Collaros isn’t bad, but he isn’t in the same category as Reilly. However, the Roughriders have a better defence than the Eskimos do.
Take the Eskimos to win. Reilly is not going to have two bad games in a row. But if the Roughriders win, don’t expect them to cover the spread. The over/under is a little high, but these two teams are capable of scoring 53 points; take the over.
