Dusan Lajovic meets Felix Auger-Aliassime in the first match of the quarter-final tie between Serbia and Canada at the inaugural ATP Cup 2020 at the Ken Rosewall Arena (the Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre) in Sydney on Friday.
Although Novak Djokovic is very clearly the leading light in the Serbian ranks, it would be a mistake to believe that they are a one-man team.
The 29 year-old Lajovic is a very capable player himself and is currently ranked no. 34 in the world. He won two of his three singles matches in the group stage.
The 19 year-old Auger-Aliassime has a higher ranking than his opponent at no. 21 in the world and, whereas it would be fair to say that Lajovic’s singles career has probably peaked given his age, there is still plenty of upward potential for the teenager over the next few years. Basically, if he plays to the levels he is capable of, he wins this match.
That said, Auger-Aliassime has lost two of his three singles matches at the ATP Cup to date and he has also played in all three of Canada’s doubles matches (winning two of them).
