Thiem’s reputation is that of a clay-court specialist, having lost the last two French Open finals to Rafael Nadal, but he has proved his ability to perform on other surfaces this past fortnight.
The Austrian fifth seed beat world number one Nadal in the quarter-final, then recovered from a set down to beat Germany’s Alexander Zverev in Friday’s semi-final 3-6 6-4 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (7-4).
The first set was difficult, with Djokovic trailing 4-1 and 40-0 in the opening set before recovering to win the tie-break. From then on there was only going to be one winner.
Head To Head
Thiem and Djokovic have met 10 times previously, with the Serbian only leading 6-4 in the head-to-head. In fact, the 26 year-old Thiem has won four of the last five meetings, albeit three of those wins were on clay.
However, Thiem also won 6-7 (5-7) 6-5 7-6 (7-5) when they last met at the ATP Finals indoors in London last year.
