Thiem provided an upset with a 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 7-6 (8-6) win over world number one and top seed Rafael Nadal in the quarter-finals, in a match lasting four hours and 10 minutes.
The 26 year-old Austrian’s ground strokes proved too much for Nadal, with the number five seed hitting 65 winners.
Zverev also required four sets as he eliminated the veteran Swiss three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka 1-6 6-3 6-4 6-2 in his quarter-final.
The 22 year-old German had pre-tournament issues with his form and service, but has clearly overcome both over the last fortnight.
Head To Head
The head-to-head record favours Thiem, with the pair having met on eight occasions and the Austrian leading 6-2. However, five of those matches were on Thiem’s favoured clay surface, of which he won four.
This will be the first Australian Open semi-final for both players and the first appearance in the last four of any Grand Slam event for Zverev.
Whoever comes out of this match as the winner will face Novak Djokovic, who has 7 Australian Open titles, in Sunday’s final.

Dominic Thiem’s superior head-to-head record, greater experience at this level of the game and his performance against Nadal understandably make him the favourite in terms of Aussie Open 2020 predictions. However, he could well need the full five sets to prevail.
