The Canadian tennis player Denis Shapovalov meets Ričardas Berankis in the first round of the Men’s singles at Wimbledon on Tuesday morning (local time).
Shapovalov has a current world ranking of 27 and is seeded 29 at Wimbledon this year. The 20 year-old left-handed Russian-Canadian (who was actually born in Tel Aviv, Israel) was a junior Grand Slam Wimbledon singles winner in 2016.
In his first appearance at Wimbledon as a professional last year, he won in his first round match by defeating Jeremy Chardy, but lost to Benoit Paire in the next round after taking the first set 6–0.
Denis Shapovalov been in decent form in 2019, reaching the third round of the Australian Open before losing in four sets to six-time and eventual champion Novak Djokovic. He’s since gone on to beat Tomas Berdych, Marin Cilic, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Frances Tiafoe this year and reached the semi-finals at the Miami Open before losing to eventual champion Roger Federer.
Ricardas Berankis has a current world ranking of 74 and has been as high as 50 back in May 2016. He’s the highest ranked Lithuanian tennis player of all time. The 29 year-old has never been beyond the third round at any Grand Slam event though, a feat he’s achieved twice at the Australian Open (2011 and 2013). His best performance at Wimbledon is in twice reaching the second round in 2010 and 2015.
The Lithuanian has won three ATP Challenger titles this year, which is the best record of his career to date and has seen him climb back inside the top 100.
