The 41 year-old Brazilian veteran’s last fight was a decision win over Anthony Rocco Martin in June this year. After three straight losses to Tyron Woodley, Colby Covington and Kamaru Usman (all by Unanimous Decision), there were fears that Maia’s career might be coming to a close.
However, although another title shot seems unlikely, wins over Lyman Good and Martin in 2019 indicate that Maia still has something to offer. He’s a jiu-jitsu and submission specialist, but is also an effective kickboxer.
In his last fight in July this year, the 35 year-old American Ben Askren suffered a sensational KO loss to Jorge Masvidal’s flying knee after just five seconds of the opening round. It was the first loss of Askren’s professional career.
It was only Askren’s second fight in the UFC, with “Funky” having previously held the lightweight belt at One Championship. In his Octagon debut he controversially beat Robbie Lawler in a come-from-behind bulldog choke finish.
Demian Maia vs Ben Askren Betting Lines & Prediction
Looking at UFC betting predictions for this fight, Demian Maia might be 42 in early November, but he is still an elite fighter. Like Ben Askren, Maia is predominantly a grappler. The difference is that the Brazilian has a more rounded fight game and is vastly more experienced in the UFC. There also have to be doubts as to how that record-breaking loss to Masvidal impacts on Askren.
Askren is the moderate favourite with the bookies going into this fight at -175 (1.57) with Betway Sports, with the UFC betting line on Maia at +150 (2.50) with bet365. At those odds, Maia looks a value tip to win this bout.
