It’s a third consecutive home game to start the season for the Dallas Stars (2-0-0) as they meet the Toronto Maple Leafs (2-1-0) at the American Airlines Center on Tuesday evening, as they look to defend a 100% record to date after already having beaten the Arizona Coyotes (3-0) and (the tips of many pundits and fans for Stanley Cup success) the Winnipeg Jets (5-1).
The Stars have an exciting array of attacking talent at their disposal in the likes of Tyler Seguin, Jamie Benn and Alex Radulov, but few anticipated their defensive stability to date, with just one goal being conceded in their opening two games. Many NHL predictions suggested that their defensive frailties would be a cause for concern this season and there’s little doubt that tougher questions will be asked of them as their campaign.
The Maple Leafs started their season with an OT win over their arch-rivals, the Montreal Canadiens (3-2), before suffering a hugely disappointing 5-3 loss at home to an Ottawa Senators team that is widely expected to struggle this season. They returned to winning ways with another overtime victory, this time away to the Chicago Blackhawks (7-6). Last Sunday’s win against the Blackhawks included a hat-trick from recent recruit John Tavares, who is already looking to be an astute signing.
There was a wealth of attacking talent on display for the Maple Leafs even before the addition of Tavares, but at present, they do look somewhat suspect defensively. Even so, they look to be fairly attractive betting odds to secure the win in Dallas.
