Conor “The Notorious” McGregor (21-4-0) is back in the octagon after 15-months away for a Welterweight bout against the veteran Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone (36-13-0) that’s the main event of UFC246 in Las Vegas on Saturday January 18, 2020.
There are plenty of question marks surrounding McGregor’s return, not least whether Cerrone is the right opponent for him. Cerrone is certainly someone McGregor will expect to beat, but he’s dangerous enough to present a real threat.
Although McGregor remains the biggest draw in the history of MMA, were he to lose to “Cowboy”, his leverage as box office elite could wane considerably.
McGregor’s ultimate aim in 2020 is to take on Khabib Nurmagomedov again for the lightweight title. Winning here is the first step towards that goal. Were he to lose to Cerrone, the Irishman’s options wouldn’t be great.
Conor McGregor vs Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone Predictions
The last time the 31 year-old McGregor fought was back in October 2018 when he lost to Nurmagomedov by submission to a rear naked choke in round four.
A couple of months prior to that he’d entered the boxing ring for a high-profile and highly-lucrative fight against the legendary Floyd Mayweather Jr., but that also ended in defeat when he was stopped in the 10th round. The reality is that McGregor last won a fight on November 12, 2016, when he beat Eddie Alvarez.
The 36 year-old American Donald Cerrone comes into this bout on a two-fight losing streak, amidst signs that age might just be starting to take its toll.
An eye injury forced the doctor to stop the fight against Tony Ferguson at the end of the second round back in June and Cerrone then lost to a first round KO against Justin Gaethje in September.
Cerrone remains a threat with wrestling and grappling ability. Although McGregor is almost certainly going to be physically fit, there will surely be signs of rust and there has to be question marks as to whether he will be fully mentally in tune for his return.
There have to be some concerns as to McGregor’s motivation levels stepping back into the octagon, but few would argue that he would beat Cerrone at his best. McGregor is still around his peak at the age of 31 and we would expect him to have too much for an ageing fighter whose last couple of fights has raised doubts as to his durability.

Conor McGregor vs Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone Betting Tips
McGregor simply has to win this fight if he wants to have a crack at the lightweight title later in the year. The plan is that after beating Cerrone, he would then face either Nate Diaz or Jorge Masvidal in his next fight, before then taking on the winner of Nurmagomedov versus Ferguson.
The best UFC betting pick available on the Fight Result betting lines has to be for McGregor to win the fight at odds of -225 (1.44) with bet365. However, there are definite concerns as to how sharp McGregor will be, so it might also be worth waiting for the ‘Method of Victory’ odds market to fully open and then having an extra bet on McGregor to win by Decision / Technical Decision.
