Colby “Chaos” Covington (14-1-0) fights Robbie “Ruthless” Lawler (28-13-0) in a welterweight bout that’s the main event on Saturday evening at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
Former interim champion Colby Covington will attempt to secure a shot at the full title if he can beat former undisputed champion Robbie Lawler.
Covington, who is on a six-fight winning streak, won an interim title in June 2018 with a unanimous decision victory over Rafael dos Anjos.
It’s been a frustrating time for the 31 year-old Covington since then, who sidelined for several weeks following sinus surgery, but then missed out on title fight with then-champion Tyron Woodley (who suffered a thumb injury defeating British challenger Darren Till) and then Kamaru Usman who went on to claim Woodley’s title, but who then himself had to go under the knife for double hernia surgery.
Covington was promised the title shot when Usman returned but, rather than continue waiting, it would appear that he has opted to try and cement his position as the No. 1 contender in the division against his fellow Floridian and teammate.
37 year-old Robbie Lawler will be looking to get back to winning ways following his controversial first round bulldog choke submission loss to Ben Askren in his last fight in March 2019.
