Spread: Patriots by 3
Money Line: Chiefs +154; Patriots -171
Last week was supposed to be the first real test for the Jaguars, and they passed with flying colours. The defence still allowed over 500 yards of offence, but they forced five turnovers. But the key takeaway is that Patrick Mahomes faced his first tough defence and still played well.
This week, the test will not be the Patriots defence, but trying to keep up with Tom Brady and the New England offence.
Brady has had some trouble getting the offence moving, but it is not unusual for New England’s offence to struggle some the first few weeks. But the Patriots appear to have found a running game in Sony Michel. Rob Gronkowski is still the best tight end in the game, and Brady now has Julian Edelman back in the lineup.
It would be shocking if they were to have trouble moving the ball against the Chiefs (or anyone else moving forward). But can their defence slow down Mahomes and company?
Probably not. Andrew Luck lit them up for 300+ last week, and he didn’t have near the calibre of skill position guys to work with as Mahomes.
So, what fans are going to have on their hands here is a good old-fashioned shootout. Both teams are going to score early and often (so take the over). It will likely be a close game. But in this instance, the wily veteran is going to beat the bold newcomer.
Take the Patriots to win. But don’t expect them to cover the spread.
