Canada meet Switzerland at the Steel Arena in Kosice on Thursday afternoon (local time) in the quarter-final stage of the IIHF World Championship 2019.
Canada finished top of Group A after beating the USA 3-0 in their final group game, while former leaders Finland went down to a slightly surprising 4-2 loss to Germany. The Canadians lost their opening group game 3-1 to Finland, but have since reeled off six straight wins.
For their part, Switzerland finished fourth in Group B, having ended with a 5-4 loss to the Czech Republic. They won four and lost three of their group games, also going down to defeats against Sweden and Russia as well as the Czechs. Indeed, they come into the Canada game on the back of three straight losses, so the form of the two teams could hardly be more different.
This tie represents an opportunity for Team Canada to exact revenge on the Swiss, who surprisingly beat them 3-2 at the semi-final of the IIHF World Championship 2018 in Denmark.
Switzerland also beat Canada in the group stage at the IIHF World Championship 2017, winning again 3-2, although on this occasion the game went to OT after the Swiss had rallied from being two goals down in the opening 6:28 of the first period. Canada have beaten Switzerland in other tournaments in the meantime, but it’s the Swiss who have had the advantage in recent IIHF World Championship encounters.
