The Calgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks meet again on Saturday night, this time at the Scotiabank Saddledome, just three days after the Canucks claimed a 5-2 victory when they met in their season opener at the Rogers Arena,
After a horrendous preseason in which the Canucks went 1-6-0 in their seven games, with minus-19 goal differential and only scoring 11 goals themselves, Wednesday’s result was somewhat unexpected. Neither of these teams found scoring goals easy last season, with both averaging just 2.66 Goals per Game, so the Canucks netting five goals also came as a shock.
The Flames have tried to address their issues by hiring ex-Carolina Hurricanes coach Bill Peters to replace Glen Gulutzan. They have also brought in additional firepower in James Neal (25 goals, 44 points for the Vegas Golden Knights last season), Elias Lindholm (16 goals, 44 points for the Hurricanes) and Derek Ryan (15 goals, 38 points for the Hurricanes).
The Canucks are now without the retired Sedin twins, Henrik and Daniel and have attempted to replace their experience with the signings of Jay Beagle (7 goals, 22 points for the Washington Capitals), Tim Schaller (12 goals, 22 points for the Boston Bruins) and Antoine Roussel (5 goals, 17 points for the Dallas Stars). Despite Wednesday’s victory, the odds are still very much on another season of struggle for the Canucks though.
The Flames will be desperate to make amends for Wednesday’s defeat and they have a better team to make them the tips to succeed in that goal.
