The Boston Bruins have home-ice against the Ottawa Senators at TD Garden on Monday afternoon, with both teams having started the new season with a win and a loss apiece.
The Bruins were seen as definite Stanley Cup contenders in the preseason predictions of many ice hockey pundits, but they started the season in the worst possible way with a 7-0 loss and a desperately poor away to the current Stanley Cup holders, the Washington Capitals. The Bruins allowed 37 shots on goal and they were already six goals down at the end of the second period.
The Bruins did restore the order the very next day when they themselves went to the KeyBank Center to give the Buffalo Sabres a comprehensive 4-0 beating.
There were few expectations for the Senators going into the new hockey season, particularly as a team that struggled badly in the last campaign now had to cope without their captain and star player, Erik Karlsson, who left for the San Jose Sharks.
However, they’ve actually started the season in decent form. A 4-3 OT defeat on home-ice to the Chicago Blackhawks was disappointing, particularly as Craig Anderson also stopped 39 of the 43 shots he faced in their losing effort, but they bounced back with a surprise 5-3 victory away to the preseason Stanley Cup favourites, the Toronto Maple Leafs at the Scotiabank Arena on Saturday evening.
It is worth noting that the Senators have a habit of raising their game for the Battle of Ontario though, so it’s a question of whether they can attain that level of performance on a regular basis. They seem unlikely to do so against the Bruins.
