Anthony “AJ” Joshua (22-0) makes his fight debut on American soil in a unified heavyweight world title contest against Andy “The Destroyer” Ruiz Jr (32-1) at Madison Square Garden in New York on 1 June.
Anthony Joshua, the IBF, WBO and WBA world champion, last fought back in September, when he stopped Alexander Povetkin in an impressive performance.
Although California-born Andy Ruiz Jr has lost only one of his 33 bouts, he is widely seen as not being up to the standard of opponent that the world champion should be taking on at this stage. In fairness to both fighters, Ruiz Jr has stepped in for Jarrell “Big Baby” Miller on short notice, after the latter failed three pre-fight drug tests.
The one blot on Ruiz Jr’s resume came on points in his WBO title fight with Joseph Parker in Auckland in 2016. Parker later went on to lose the title to Joshua on points.
Joshua is the overwhelming bookies favourite here for a good reason. Joshua is 22-0 with 21 knockouts, having seen off every single opponent inside the distance other than the aforementioned Parker.
For his part, Ruiz is 32-1, with 22 KOs. That looks impressive initially, but if he couldn’t stop the likes of Joell Godfrey, Raphael Zumbano Love and Franklin Lawrence, it’s difficult to make much of a case for him stopping a fighter of Joshua’s quality.
